The 2017 general elections were originally scheduled for 18 June, but when the opposition announced a boycott and after a three-month crisis, an agreement was reached between the parties to postpone the elections to 25 June 2017. That date remained within the timeline of the electoral period. On 21 May 2017, President Nishani adopted a decree for the postponement on the basis of this consensus.
