A general election to the Riksdag and a general election to municipal and county council assemblies shall be held on the
same day. The election day shall be the third Sunday in September. Elections to the European Parliament shall be held in June every fifth year.


In the case of re-election to the Riksdag, the Government shall decide on the date that will be the election day. In the
case of re-election to a county council or municipal assembly, the Central Election Authority shall decide, following consultation
with the county administrative board, the date that will be the election day.


In the case of extraordinary elections according to Chapter 3, Section 4 of the Instrument of Government the Government shall decide the date that will be the election day.


In the case of extraordinary elections according to Chapter 6, Section 3 of the Instrument of Government the Speaker of the Riksdag shall decide, following consultation with the Central Election Authority, the date that will be the election day.
