As a measure to encourage the participation of women, the Electoral Code now requires every candidate list to have at least 40 per cent of candidates reserved for the less-represented gender – for members of parliament and for members of municipal councils and the City of Skopje – with at least one in each consecutive third and tenth places on the list (candidates are elected in the order of the list). These are effective mechanisms for promoting women's participation in political and public life, in line with OSCE commitments and international standards.
