This kind of representation has at times been defined as “corporative democracy”. Nevertheless, it is possible to put in question its democratic character since it has been adopted under notoriously anti-democratic regimes. One of the pillars of democracy is popular sovereignty. Since the beginning of constitutionalism, the nation (in the French tradition) or the people are conceived as an entity created by social contract and which governs directly or through freely chosen representatives.
