The provisions which regulate the setting of the date of elections are thus rather complicated. However, their general purpose is clear: to provide ample time for both authorities and political forces to prepare for elections and to prevent an undue prolongation of the mandates of elected bodies. This purpose could be thwarted if the President could, through new decrees, cancel the elections and set a new date for them, perhaps even without respecting the time limits set out in the Electoral Code.
