Democratic elections are more than counting votes. They are supposed to be free, fair, and inclusive competitions that allow voters to “vote their conscience.” Fairness depends on many factors. For instance, an election where the authorities only allow candidates who are supportive of the regime to run for office will still be a mockery of an election, even if voters pick their personal favourites from the list without fear of reprisal, votes are counted transparently and accurately, and the results are reported accurately.
