It has been repeatedly found that when individuals make up numbers they tend to pick some digits too frequently and others too rarely. Applied in the field of elections, if results from polling stations feature certain decimals much more frequently than others, this might indicate that these results are not the product of a genuine vote count, but instead were invented or manipulated (Mebane, 2008, Deckert et al., 2011, Medzihorsky, 2015, and many others).
