For NHST to be useful, among other requirements, the researcher must select the test statistic and the threshold for the p-value so that they fit the question asked of the test and the decision to be made based on it. This is especially important because the “power” of tests— the ability of a test to correctly conclude that the null hypothesis is false when a particular alternative hypothesis is true—is limited by the sample size.
