Since the case of Gitonas and others v. Greece the European Court of Human Rights holds that the right to be elected is not an absolute one but includes ‘implicit limitations” imposed by the states – such as grounds for ineligibilty – to ensure equality among candidates and to preserve the electorate from pressures of the officials in charge.
