Furthermore, term limits can help ensure accountability among elected representatives, and thus help promote the human right to political participation, by preventing concentrations of power in the Presidency that may distort the effective functioning of genuine periodic elections in ensuring accountability. Finally, a recent study shows that term limits may be in the interest of voters “despite the accountability effect of elections”: they may foster ““truthful” behavior by incumbents, which in turn enables voters to selectively re-elect higher quality agents to a second term in office strengthen electoral accountability of executive” by reducing the value of holding office.
