Paragraph 27

There are numerous counterarguments to the wisdom of term limits for MPs. The most general one is that they are undemocratic in that they restrict voters’ rights, reducing representatives’ accountability through elections, and hence the right and the capacity of citizens to hold those in power accountable. From this point of view, restrictions on re-election or term limits directly affect one of the foundations of a democracy: the capacity to choose representatives freely, by popular vote, without restraints.
