It may be concluded from the above that the election system for the office of mayor (whether by direct or indirect elections) has a direct impact on the choice of the mechanisms in place in different countries for the removal of mayors, before the end of their term. If the mayor is directly elected by the people, revocation by the municipal council does not seem an option unless it is confirmed by a popular vote or it implies new elections to the municipal council, following its automatic dissolution, as is the case in Italy.
