Because malpractice can alter election outcomes at many points in the electoral process, there is a need for a spectrum of statistical tests sensitive to problems in different aspects of the election. Unfortunately, using a multitude of tests also increases the risk of falsely flagging a fair election as fraudulent, as a result of “statistical multiplicity.”
