Recent empirical research suggests that it is not so much district magnitude as “party magnitude” that matters. While district magnitude is defined by the number of seats to be elected in a district, party magnitude describes the number of seats a party wins (or expects to win) in a district. Only if a party anticipates that it wins several seats in a constituency will ticketbalancing come into effect.
