From the arguments above it should be clear that electoral systems and gender quotas alone do not guarantee high levels of women’s representation. As for the political context, parties play a prominent role for balancing gender representation in parliament since they control the nomination process. In the literature, the following party characteristics are singled out for positively influencing women’s representation.
