A noteworthy initiative to address issues of political manipulation, misinformation, fake news, privacy violations and other malign forces on the internet is a Contract for the Web proposal by the World Wide Web Foundation. Such an initiative, if broadly supported and implemented at global level, could have the particular advantage of avoiding situations where the owner of a social media platform can alone determine what constitutes permissible speech.
