The obligation to collect a specific number of supporting signatures for candidacies is quite common. In some countries (e.g. Germany, Russian Federation) parliamentary parties can submit nominations without supporting signatures, but non-parliamentary parties or independent candidates are required to collect signatures of supporters. Elsewhere, all potential candidates or candidate lists are required to submit a certain number of signatures of voters.
