Apart from free airtime, paid political advertising is another opportunity for the political parties and candidates to disseminate their message through the media. In a number of countries (e.g. Andorra, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK), however, paid political advertising is prohibited on public and/or private television (and sometimes radio), but often (e.g. in France) allowed in print media in the period leading up to elections. Several other countries (e.g. Montenegro, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, and Ukraine) permit paid political advertising also on television during campaigns.
