Rules concerning the private media are less common that those relating to the public media. However, in some states there is a requirement for both the private and the public audiovisual media to be balanced. For example, supporters and opponents have the same air time in the two types of media in Bulgaria and Cyprus. In Austria, the requirement of impartiality and objectivity also applies to private radio and television stations, while in France and Ireland they must provide supporters and opponents of the draft proposal with fair coverage. This was also the case in Finland at the time of the referendum on accession to the European Union.
