In recent years, foreign intervention in elections through the use of social media has also become a concern for democracies. Technological resources such as low-cost digital espionage campaigns, paid users and bots, selective disclosure of information or creation of false information has changed the rules of the game during electoral campaigns. As a side effect, this has eroded confidence in democratic governments.
