In certain cases untrue information has been strategically disseminated with the intent to influence election results. It has been documented that cyber troops on the internet are often government, military or political party teams committed to manipulating public opinion over social media. Organised social media manipulation first emerged in 2010, and by 2017 there are details on such organisations in 28 countries.
