The prohibition of the use of force is enshrined in Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. It is also part of customary international law. The International Court of Justice has itself recognised this principle both as a ‘cornerstone of the United Nations Charter’, and as a rule of customary international law. The prohibition on the use of force is also generally accepted as a norm of ius cogens.
