Based on the above, any restrictions to the right to stand for election should be prescribed by law, pursue a legitimate aim, be justifiable based on objective, reasonable and non-discriminatory criteria, be proportionate, with sufficient procedural safeguards afforded to the individual to protect against arbitrariness. Any restrictions on electoral rights should be individualised and assessed against a given country’s political and historical context.
