The most frequent reason provided for in countries with a removal from office procedure is that of removal due to a criminal conviction.22 Forfeiture due to the nature of the sanction in general applies only when a person is sentenced to imprisonment.23 National legislation may differ concerning the nature of the offence but focuses in particular on electoral offences. The nature of the offence and/or of the sanction thus enables to assess the seriousness of the offence.
