Paragraph 5

The Unified Election Code of Georgia, adopted on 2 August 2001, integrated the previous laws on presidential elections, parliamentary elections and elections for the bodies of local self-government into a single piece of legislation and thus unified the rules for elections at all levels within a comprehensive statute. In the Opinion of 24 May 2002 (CDL-AD (2002) 9) by the Venice Commission, the adoption of the Code was properly viewed as representing a major and important step forward in securing democratic standards for elections for representative government in Georgia.
