The rights of citizens to stand for office and be elected without unreasonable restrictions is a widely acknowledged universal human rights principle.[10] The Electoral Code of Belarus does not provide adequate protection of candidate rights, and on the contrary, contains several limitations on and obstacles to candidacy.
